The Government of Paraguay is taking part in the 55th International Art Exhibition for the first time, and is doing so with works of four Paraguayan artists under the title of “The Encyclopedic Palace of Paraguay”. It consists of works from various trends of contemporary art related to the main theme of the 55th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia – curated by Massimiliano Gioni.

Pedro Barrail presents his work, "View of Point", with an intervention in the main room where the Paraguayan exhibition will take place. It comes to tackling the virtual space of the canvas with the real space of the room of the Palazzo Carminati. The internal facade would be erased by its own image, which will have printed in the center a red dot: "You are not here". This situation would be the metaphor of Paraguayan cultural isolation and of its wandering in the surrounding world: "a real maze of advertising images and entertainment media‘. The work is inspired by the writings of Josefina Plá. In one of her poems, she speaks of a "Landscape with no exit" such as the photographs, an unknown place, inhabited by dreams and silence, while we see to nothingness.

The proposal of Daniel Milessi, "Yasururu Sororo" (invasion?) refers to the history of successive invaders of Guarani country (now Paraguay) through the Game of War, a video that presents a revisionist conception of history, from colonial days to the present. This game, where nobody wins, is institutionalized: usurers, bankers, and exploiters, supported by the political class in action. Something very important, from an aesthetic point of view, is the discovery by Milessi of the similarity between the design pattern of a native carpet and the videogames in-8-bit. Therefore, the visual communication more suitable for Paraguayans would be: the video games, part of the pop culture. A true Paraguayan philosophy of power is used by the big landowners, and the popular iconography. In fact the work is a video/animation/performance.

Diana Rossi was inspired by a prehistoric fossil, found recently in Paraguay. This is an installation that represents the anteater (“yurumi”) totemic animal of the indigenous tribe Ache-Guayakí of Paraguay. For them this mammal is considered genitor, sacred ancestor and icon of the ancient inhabitants of this land. It is made on the basis of “object-trouvé" such as bones, henhouse wires, and discarded leather, Coke bottles, etc. The work also recalls the genocide committed against this indigenous tribe in 1973, during the long Paraguayan dictatorship and conducted by landless peasants and soldiers. The survivors were interned in a kind of concentration camp run by Christian missionaries. The children of the massacred were sold as slaves. The idea of Diana is to pay tribute to the memory of the disappeared from the tribe Ache-Guayakí.

The work of Felix Toranzos is characterized by a proposal that intends to continue in time, the architectural design, octagonal, called in greek “Horologion”, of the Andronico of Cirro (late first century B.C.) and that appears after 2000 years repeated in the dome of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Asuncion, Paraguay. This Museum has no physical space of its own in the country and is still looking for a final destination. This "Palace of the Winds", which is also a clock of the elapsed time through history, has been transformed, thanks to the creativity of the artist, in a series of panels, printed with geometric figures of hermetic renaissance inspiration sealed by the purest Pythagorean tradition, where the geometry and the numbers are divine. The search for lost times is retrieved, in this way, through art.

CRISTINA GRAJALES NAMED CURATOR OF DESIGN: FAIRCHILD EXHIBITS
AT FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANIC GARDEN

Coral Gables, FL, February 7, 2013 – On December 1, 2012, the “Sitting Naturally” art exhibit from the Cristina Grajales Gallery in New York City went on display at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Seven talented artists from around the world were commissioned to design natural looking benches to complement Fairchild’s tropical backdrop. Cristina Grajales, the New York gallery’s founder, served as the exhibit’s visiting curator during the popular Art Basel Miami Beach as part of the inaugural Design: Fairchild. Following the success of the inaugural event and the Sitting Naturally exhibit, Fairchild is pleased to announce Grajales as the returning curator for all future Design: Fairchild exhibits. She will showcase the latest and most innovative works of art and design at Fairchild during Art Basel.

Grajales opened the Cristina Grajales Gallery in 2001 to explore the expanding field of design. The gallery, which specializes in 20th century and contemporary design, serves clients who are dedicated art collectors and represents artists who blur the lines between art and functional design. It was a founding gallery of the Design Miami and Design Miami Basel international design shows. Grajales strongly believes in educating the community about art, so she launched the Dialogues with Design Legends lecture series at the renowned 92nd Street Y in Manhattan to bring in celebrated artists and designers to talk about the industry. She also serves on the board of Creative Time, a nonprofit arts organization devoted to promoting public art.

Design: Fairchild is going to be an annual exhibition held during Art Basel Miami Beach that celebrates art and culture. As part of Fairchild’s Art Program, it supports conservation work and educational and scientific outreach programs. The Art Program has featured works from artists like Jorge Pardo, John Chamberlain, Will Ryman, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Yayoi Kusama, Mark di Suvero, Roy Lichtenstein, Dale Chihuly, Fernando Botero, Yoko Ono, Franz West, Ursula von Rydingsvard and Kris Martin. It is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Lin Lougheed, Aaron I. Fleischman, and the Cristina Grajales Gallery.

	Tuesday, October 2, 2012

	5:30PM - 7:30PM

The New York Times describes him as “humorously avant-garde”, while ID Magazine put his picture on their cover and simply wrote: “Sebastian Errazuriz meet Fame”. Over the past several years, Chilean-born, New York-based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz has been critically acclaimed by the specialized press for his immensely creative and beautifully crafted works. The variety and depth of his talent has surpassed the design world to be featured globally in mediums such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times, highlighting his thought provoking works ranging from Christian Popsicles to the Occupy Movement.

“The Journey of Sebastian Errazuriz” is his first monograph and will be published by Gestalten. The book includes two conversations, one between Errazuriz and the artist Tom Sachs, and the other with Errauriz and MoMa senior curator Paola Antonelli. Art critic Christian Viveros-Faune writes the introduction.

Ironic, sophisticated, precise—the work of Sebastian Errazuriz moves elegantly between art and design. His humor reminds us of the visual exercises of Irwin Wurm while his morbid charm and elegant wit suggests a conceptual kinship with artists Maurizio Cattelan and Gabriel Orozco. His work has already been shown at over 40 exhibitions in cities including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Barcelona alongside design legends such as Ingo Maurer, Marcel Wanders, and the Campana brothers.

The Art of Knit, by United Colors of Benetton, is a new type of pop-up experience in the heart of Soho, New York City. Here you will find a world of knit, color and creativity—the definitive story of the Benetton brand. The converted garage space is a vivid mix of retail, gallery and craft workshop knitted together by the creative minds of You Nguyen, the Creative Director and FABRICA, Benetton Group’s Communication Research Center.

A vibrant color spectrum of apparel & accessories is framed by an explosion of wool-covered curiosities, artworks and illustrations. Such an environment challenges conventional ideas of a clothing store, where dolphins, cactus, neons and sex positions are all welcome. In true Benetton style it is a celebration of diversity—needless to say you are also welcome.

Lincoln House 33-34 Hoxton Square. London, N1 6NN
Opening: Wednesday September 19th 7pm – 11pm (Show on view until the 22nd)

The New York Times described him as “humorously avant-garde”, while ID put his picture on the cover of its magazine and simply wrote: “Sebastian Errazuriz meet Fame”. Over the past years Chilean born New York based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz has been critically acclaimed by the specialized press for his immensely creative and beautifully crafted works. The variety and depth of his talent would surpass the design world to be featured globally in mediums such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, or The Financial Times, highlighting his thought provoking works ranging from Christian Popsicles to US soldiers suicide rates or the Occupy Movement.

For the first time in his career during the 2012 London Design Festival, Sebastian Errazuriz will be unveiling a selection of exceptional hand made models, drawings and blueprints behind some of his most iconic pieces. Together with these exquisite small-scale studies, Errazuriz will also present his finalized full size version of the “Boat Coffin” and a new version of the “Body of Work” coffee table, photographed as if he had just passed away. The designer hopes to transform the exhibition into a sort of funeral or wake in which his monograph launch marks the end of a decade of work and the start of a new one.

His work has already been shown at over 40 exhibitions in cities including New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Barcelona alongside design legends such as Ingo Maurer, Marcel Wanders, and the Campana brothers. Sotheby’s sold one of his pieces at its renowned Important Twentieth Century Design auction when he was only 28 years old. Today, Errazuriz’s creations are snatched up the second they leave his Brooklyn studio.

On July 31 to August 1, 2012 Michele Oka Doner joined the Museum glassmakers of the Corning Museum of Glass to explore her designs and concepts in a public GlassLab program through the Museum. The GlassLab started by the Corning Glass Museum is an innovative program for designers from many disciplines to experience the material of glass in new ways few have access to. The portable glass workshop has traveled among the US and Europe spanning public design venues like Design Miami/Art Basel, the venue where Michele had her first experience with the glass makers in 2008. The GlassLab has also travelled to the Cooper-Hewitt, and National Design Museums. Within the portable stage, designer and glassmaker collaborate, rapidly prototyping design concepts created beforehand by the designer using the immediacy of hot glass as a catalyst for innovation.

For her second experience with the GlassLab Michele created concepts and designs inspired by a species of seaweed native to her beloved Miami Beach, Florida called sargassum. Working along side the glassmakers Michele created vessels with the essence of sargassum and the natural world. The sargassum seaweeds particles reminded Michele of lungs and breath, which she connected with the art of glass blowing.

The GlassLab continues to travel and put on shows publicly and privately, exploring alongside artists ways to innovate the design of glass. For more information on their public and private exhibitions and programs access is through the Corning Museum of Glass. Below is a picture of Michele from one of the two, two hour sessions on the glass lab stage from July 31 to August 2, 2012.

Barry Whistler Gallery has had a long association with artist John-Paul Philippe. His work has been included in many group exhibitions going back to 1989. This is their first solo show with the artist, which will take place from June 16th to July 26th, 2012. Hill Work includes drawings, paintings, sculpture and a site specific mural on a 20’ long by 10 ½’ tall wall.

Of French Canadian descent, John-Paul Philippe was born and raised in Henryetta, Oklahoma where his father and grandfather had a glass company. He turned a lifelong interest in art into a profession after graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1978 and going to work for as an illustrator for Neiman Marcus in Dallas. After a year there, a flip of a coin took him to Santa Fe where he became immersed in painting for two years prior to moving on to London to “ visit the great museums and study art privately.” Once there, he found a job as a restorationist at a Charleston, the count retreat of the Bloomsbury group of artists and consequently became influenced by their graphics and design work. Of that experience, John-Paul has said, “I freely admit my work has a decorative sense, and all the applications I encountered in Charleston, I never would have probably thought of if I hadn’t been there.”

In the early 1990’s, while on a visit to New York, a chance encounter with legendary creative director Simon Doonan landed John-Paul a design assignment with the upscale clothing store Barney’s. The production of a small painted mural led to the creation of massive sculptural entrances and interior treatments for Barney flagship stores worldwide and launched career identifying him as a designer. “I have always considered myself a painter, and never really approached any of the other disciplines. Other things developed through working with Barney’s. I look at the architectural plans for the stores and then think about where we can intervene with art. The influence for the sculptures literally came from my paintings. I just removed the backgrounds and the abstract shapes remained. In all of the sculptures you look through openings or apertures. People focus on that and you direct their line of sight.”

Barry Whistler Gallery is located in the Deep Ellum area of downtown Dallas at 2909-B Canton Street. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, Noon to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.

The Art Association of Jackson Hole is pleased to present Michele Oka Doner: Earth Fire Air Water, from June 1st to July 27th 2012. Organized and curated by Camille Obering, the show will highlight Oka Doner’s life long interest in connecting nature and humanity through both art practice and design objects. The Art Association will be collaborating with Dancers’ Workshop, which will present dance programming inspired by Oka Doner’s work in the gallery space during the opening night event June 1st and on Center Stage Theatre at the Center for the Arts, June 15th and 16th. Collaboration with Dancers’ Workshop will offer unique cultural programming highlighting the connections between visual and performing arts.

Michele Oka Doner: Earth Fire Air Water: The selected pieces in this show reflect Oka Doner’s own interpretation of the elements. The show will include five 96 x 48 inch, one 72 x 36 inch, and two 46 x 46 inch relief prints from organic material such as grasses, roots, and branches, representing earth. The organic material is composed on printing plates to reflect the human form in various ways. This involves both risk taking and the element of chance, as the materials have the inclination to move as they are inked and then subjected to the rigors of the printing process itself. When the press blankets are pulled back and the image revealed, the resulting larger than life figures seem to have given birth to themselves. Placed on the floor in the middle of the surrounding human relief prints will be Oka Doner’s star bases (fire), cast bronze sculptures resembling root systems and which hold candles. The star bases are reminiscent of explosions, with energy bursting from the center of the form. They are derived from forming rotting wood elements, the detritus of very old tree roots – the flotsam and jetsam of the woods – with wax.

	Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm; Saturday 12:00pm - 4:00pm
