November 7th, 2013 - March 14, 2014
Cristina Grajales Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition in the United States of work by Hechizoo, Voyages/Explorations.
Voyages/Explorations will transform the gallery space into the Amazon, bringing its flora and fauna indoors through the use of hand-made textiles. Surrounded by rugs, tapestries, and sculptural objects, the viewer will be invited to move through this magical environment much like a 19th century botanical expedition. In addition to paying homage to the Amazonian landscape, Voyages/Explorations will honor the indigenous people who call this incredible forest home.
A self-taught weaver born in 1968, Jorge Lizarazo originally studied architecture at Los Andes University. Upon graduation he moved to France where he practiced architecture in the offices of Santiago Calatrava and Massimiliano Fuksas. Through these experiences, he was exposed to contemporary architectural trends and innovative construction methods that informed his later work. The inventive use of materials quickly defined the textiles with the ingenious integration of indigenous organic fibers with man-made materials such as metals and nylon monofilament.
Based in Bogota, Colombia, Lizarazo founded his weaving atelier Hechizoo in 2000. Since its inception, Hechizoo has produced custom made rugs, upholstery fabric, window treatments, and architectural screens for the worlds most important spaces, both public and private. In addition to several important private collections, Hechizoo’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Art and Design and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
Please join us for the opening reception at Cristina Grajales Gallery on Thursday, November 7th from 6PM-8PM.
